Borough of Bernville


Bernville Borough is located 12 miles northwest of the city of Reading and 6 miles south of Interstate 78. It is a small borough which contains a predominantly residential Main Street, two parks, two churches, a library, and several residential developments. It is in the Tulpehocken School District.

Bernville was named for Berne, the capitol of Switzerland, in 1820. It was incorporated as a borough in 1851. Presently, it is home to 865 residents.

Memorial Marker Unveiling
Old Northkill Cemetery

We honor the creator of Bernville's Main Street on the anniversary of his birth. A new memorial marker will be unveiled at the base of Johan Thomas Umbenhauer's present grave stone. Refreshments after the ceremony in Evangelical Lutheran Friedens Church on Main Street.

Arbor Day
Umbenhauer Park
12:00 p.m.
Ceremony; tree planting follows. At 10:30 a.m., Scouts and resident volunteers will begin preparing the park for spring and summer use. Volunteers welcome! Bring work gloves!
May 27
Memorial Day Parade
2:00 p.m.
Parade begins at 2:00 p.m. & proceeds down Main Street to Umbenhauer Park. Ceremony in Umbenhauer Park after the parade.
June 1
Community Yard Sale
7:00 a.m.
Come and find some yard-sale treasures in Bernville! Plenty of parking. Food available to purchase.

June 7 & 8
Mt. Pleasant Fireman's Carnival

Live band performances both evenings. Admission: $3.00/person. (A ticket purchased Fri. gets you in free Sat.!) Fireworks Saturday evening.

December 7
Christmas Bazaar
St. Thomas United Church of Christ
8:30 a.m.- 2:00 p.m.
Crafts and food for sale (take out or eat in). Free. Open to the public.
December 20
Caroling at the Gazebo
Stanton H. Clay Park
7:00 p.m.
Caroling, hot chocolate, and a visit from Santa.
