Borough of Sinking Spring

The name of this Borough is derived from what the Lenni Lenape Indians called the water source in this area, "sunken spring." It would later be known as the "sinking spring" by European settlers. These settlers, arriving in the first half of the eighteenth century, came from Wales, Germany, & England. They built their homes and churches, as well as a grist mill and factories, but their primary occupation was agriculture. The "sinking spring" factored predominantly in the early development of the area; it served as the central watering hole for the settlers' cattle, and then those cattle trails became the basis for the layout of the street system years later! (Limestone fissures beneath the spring cause its occasional "disappearance." Today, the spring still runs periodically. There is a small monument marking the site, on the south side of the 400 block of Penn Avenue.)

The Borough of Sinking Spring was officially incorporated on March 10, 1913. Presently, Sinking Spring is home to 2,639 residents and contains within its borders two churches, many thriving businesses (especially along Rt. 422/Penn Ave), one playground, and a library.
